The Port Authority added six weekday ferry crossings Monday to absorb bridge traffic, then canceled two of them when crews found that the replacement vessel required a replacement crew.
Morning lines curled around the Broker terminal before sunrise. Commuters boarded in groups determined by capacity, weather and the confidence of the attendant holding the rope.
Officials said every scheduled boat would sail unless operational conditions made sailing impractical. Asked which conditions qualified, a spokesman listed wind, water, engines and demand.
Vendors at both terminals reported record coffee sales. The Authority has opened bidding for a permanent kiosk, with construction expected shortly after bridge traffic returns to normal.
