A pizza counter near Jade Street continues to sell a plain slice for one dollar, resisting rising flour, cheese and rent costs through a combination of smaller paper plates and determined arithmetic.
The price applies to cash orders before 6 p.m. A card transaction adds thirty-five cents. Heating the slice beyond its current temperature adds twenty-five. Napkins remain complimentary when requested with sufficient specificity.
Owner Sal Giordano said the dollar sign in the window has become part of the neighborhood and cannot be changed without landmarks approval. The landmarks office said it has never heard of the shop.
Customers remain loyal. During the lunch rush, a line stretched past two newer restaurants selling heritage flatbread for sixteen dollars and silence for free.
